• Is it even legal where you are? Many states and counties regulate horse burial: minimum depth, setbacks from wells, streams, and property lines, and sometimes a requirement to bury within a set number of hours. Burial and cremation aren't the only options, and in some areas they aren't available at all:

• Livestock removal and rendering. Often the lowest-cost route, but it doesn't return any remains to you, and availability varies by region.
• Burial at a pet or equine cemetery. A small number of pet cemeteries accept horses. It solves the biggest problem with home burial — you don't need to own the land, and the grave stays in a dedicated place that won't be sold or built on — while still giving you a permanent site to visit. Availability is sparse and the site may be a long drive away, so weigh how often you'd realistically go.
• A partial cremation alongside burial or removal. Some owners choose the lower-cost route for the body — communal burial, rendering, or removal — and ask their vet to preserve a small part of the horse to be individually cremated.
